Your Dental Checkup

A dental checkup generally consists of a professional cleaning, a comprehensive dental examination, periodic X-rays, and a chat with your dentist about any changes in your health since your last visit. Visiting the dentist every six months is a key component of maintaining your overall health; not only does it keep your smile clean, but it can help you keep an eye on your overall health too!

Dental Cleanings

In most cases, a professional cleaning is the first step in a regular dental checkup. Our dental hygienists scale, or scrape, off any tartar from above and below the gum line and in around your teeth using specialized metal instruments. Next, they will polish your teeth using a slightly abrasive paste and a polishing tool to deep clean your exposed enamel, removing any tartar left behind after scaling. Finally, they’ll take floss and gently clean in between all your teeth, and may offer you a fluoride rinse, before they call the dentist in for your checkup.

During Your Check Up

Comprehensive Exam

Once your teeth are clean, your dentist will perform a comprehensive oral exam. They are looking for signs of unusual tooth wear, cracks, gum disease, early indications of oral cancer, and more. Each time you visit for a checkup, your dentist will:

Based on your cleaning and exam, we’ll discuss any changes or necessary treatment recommendations and offer helpful tips on how to improve your oral hygiene before your next appointment.

Dental X-Rays

Dental x-rays are a commonly used diagnostic tool. X-rays can often detect the early stages of tooth decay and gum disease between your teeth, in hard to see areas. Your medical and dental history, age, and current oral and overall health will determine how frequently we recommend the use of x-rays. New-patient checkups often include X-rays as a means of establishing a baseline for future visits. All dental services performed by a general dentist.
